Setting up a business in China
Although recently introduced laws and regulations are making it easier for foreigners to set up a business in China, statistics from the World Bank show that China can still be a very challenging destination for foreign businesses.
Below are some World Bank figures from 2007 which show China's world ranking in terms of ease of doing business:
| Ease of... | 2007 rank |
|---|---|
| Starting a Business | 128 |
| Dealing with Licenses | 175 |

The World Bank rates China overall in terms of doing business as the 83rd most difficult economy to operate in. By way of comparison, they rank Australia as number one, Italy at 53rd, Canada at number 7 and the U.S.A. and the U.K. at 3 and 6 respectively.
As you can see, foreign entrants face a very steep learning curve indeed when approaching China.
